Title: R4 Revolution for DS
Post by: marculos on May 21, 2012, 09:04:53 AM
I got lucky and picked up a DS off freecycle a while ago, one broken hinge but in good working order. I was curious about the DS homebrew scene and bought a R4 Flash card for 4.99 delivered from China. I added a 2gb micro sd for 1.99 too.  This R4 doesn't support sdhc cards.

It was very easy to setup, I just copied the Wood R4 firmware to the sd card and was able to boot into the R4 card interface. Its not bad at all for running emulators though the DS isn't exactly quick so it will struggle to play some emulated games for sure !

So far I have a great Spectrum eumulator working as well as a Megadrive, Mastersystem, PC Engine and a SNES. Fairly impressed so far for 7 quid you cant go wrong !

Yeah I have an R4 in my DS too, and have the XRoar Dragon 32/64 & Tandy CoCo emulator on it.

It's really useful for keeping images of DS games on too, saves you having to carry a whole load of different carts with you, I just wish there was an easy way of transfering carts that I'd bought to it without having to setup a less secure wifi connection :(

Cheers.

Phil, what software do you use to copy stuff to the card wirelessly, can you use FTP or similar ?

Ah yes the old R4 Revolution.

Many memories of trying to get that one fixed back in the day :)

Phill :)

I've not actually done any copying as I'm not prepared to decrese the security on my wireless...It's just that a google search suggested that was what was needed....

Cheers.

It looks like there is an FTP client that can be used which means I can leave in the sd card.

I have a lovely Draytek router which means I can have multiple wifi networks so I have WPS for my pcs and a dodgy WEP one for the DS, guess I should add extra security on the WEP wifi like MAC Address filtering or something if I can be bothered !

Can we make sure what we are talking about on here is just home brew - hopefully like me emulation is my main use for the DS. Please do not take this discussion any further than home brew. :)

Sorry but those are the rules - we don't want to be shut down for illegal stuff! :(

PS - The speccy emulator is stunning - I have actually coded a game/demo on there . . . ;)

Just have to say both the Amstrad and Spectrum emus on the DS are both class ! I have FTP working too so no need to take out the sd card anymore. The DS is turning into a great little portable emulator...

Id also recommend using the Wood software on the R4 card, its dead easy to get a hold of and after trying several different bits of software iv'e found it to be the most reliable and easy to use. Plus, it also looks woody :D
