Title: WANTED: RM Nimbus PC
Post by: woody.cool on February 19, 2009, 10:27:25 PM
Hi all,

I'm looking for an RM Nimbus PC, a working one, please!
(preferably with the MS-DOS disks, too)

For those who don't know what one is, here's a pic of one:

I live in the UK and don't mind picking it up.

Cheers

Yep, we used those at High school too... It was effectively a 186 PC wasnt it? I remember getting some naff CGA PC games to work on it towards the end of my High School days...

Ours were diskless - booted from the LAN.

Weird little machines.

The RM Nimbus was only sold to schools and most have been binned they are very hard to get hold of and as you say they are the only machines that really used the failed Intel 80186 chips

MS-DOS versions of Nimbus' - ye gods, you lot were *spoilt* :)

At the school I went to (81-86), the only reason you got access to the computers were if you were "special needs" (ie. in the lower two bands of the 6-tier class system) and they were full of really crappy educational software.  Which, from memory, booted off a CP/M disk in one drive and the other had the software on.

The size of the disks might give the age away .. 8" floppy disk!!!

The failings of my own education gave rise (oo-er, it's not floppy now!) to a year's 6th form doing CLAIT (I really messed up!) and we were "taught" Wordstar on the same types of machines.  Some weird network thing was installed so that you could print to the same printer but you had to wait your turn (literally putting up your hand so you could print next!).

Eeeh .. them were t'days :)

RML 380Z - that's the badger - not the 480Z (wrong colour after a quick Google search)!

BIG disks going into BIG disk drives :)

WOW! Much bigger than the 480Z with the 5.25" drives that we had.

I remember those awesome CUB monitors .... they're a blast from the past, too!

I was speaking to my dad about this last night (He's been on the governing board at a local senior school for about 14 years!) and asked what happens with old computers etc....

He advised me they are usually returned to local council as the school does not usually own them. What happens to them then he does not know. If i get any more info I'll update.

I remember thr RM Numbus and Link 380Z machines and would love one of either.

Wow what a blast from the past - cut my teeth on those old 380z machines pissing about with the ones at my dads work when waiting for him to finish. Brought back some real memories - thanks for posting the pics muguk. Seem to remember they have a rather terse single char boot command sequence - or am I mistaken ?

Yeah, the 380Z and 480Z LINK machines had an odd boot sequence.
You typed a single character command.
If I remember correctly: B was to boot from disk, L was to load a cassette and R was to run the ROM version of BASIC.
