CODING AREA / A couple of games in BASIC I worked on recently.

Some people on a discord channel I am on decided to have a go at writing some very small retro games in BASIC.

First off we decided to go with seeing what we could do in 1K. After I attempted that we agreed that 1K was probably a bit too limiting so we decided to go with 2K.

I decided BBC basic was a good bet since I know it pretty well. I have attached the two games as plain text in .bas files (including a fully commented, unoptimised version of the 1k one) and a disc image containing the games.

Obviously don't expect too much given the limitations but I was very pleased with the result of the 2K one.

CODING AREA / Acorn Electrom tape-to-disk conversion of Dujunz

Someone over on stardot forum was asking for a tape to disk conversion of the Acorn Electron version of Dunjunz.

I spent a few hours working on the conversion and managed to get it working without too much difficulty.

I decided to put together a guide to how the conversion was done.

IF you have a reasonable grasp of 6502 it should not be too difficult to understand.

One of my favourite sites Flashtro has web browser based remakes of many of those cracktros from (mostly) the amiga scene.

Not to condone piracy but those intros often held my interest for as long as the games themselves.

In addition if you are interested in the mechanics of how those games were cracked theres a whole load of tutorials to explain how it was done but you will need a good grasp of assembler to understand them.

They also are still releasing trainers for some of the more recent amiga releases.

CODING AREA / Amiga cracktro/intro sourcecode & tutorials

Probably not for pure beginners, but if you have some assembly language experience and wanted to understand how some of the demo effects were done, there's lots of source code and tutorials here.

Much of it is reverse engineered rather than original code so not always the easiest to follow but interesting all the same.

GENERAL RETRO CHIT CHAT / A new conversion for the BBC Micro

I am very proud to present to you today, my latest project that has been in progress for the last few months. I decided to put together a conversion of the game Trailblazer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trailblazer_(video_game) to the BBC Micro.

I chose this particular game as I have pretty much zero skills in terms of graphics so it was ideal for me as the game is very simple in terms of graphics.

This game was originally designed by Mr Chip software and published by Gremlin. The ZX Spectrum port was done by the in house team at Gremlin and I used this as guide for my own version written from scratch in 100% 6502 assembler for the BBC.

During the development of this game I became aware of the Sphere of destiny games released by Audiogenic and did consider scrapping this project, in the end I decided that the games were different enough to warrant me seeing the project through to release.

Here are some of the features of the game:

  • 50 FPS scrolling/animation
  • 2 game modes
    • Arcade
    • Test (Practise)
  • 14 levels
  • 7 coloured tile types with different functions
    • Slow down
    • Speed up
    • Jump
    • Reverse controls
  • High scores and fastest times saved to disc
    • Press R on the scores screen to reset them
  • 2 Input options
    • Keyboard (usual Z, X, /, *, Enter keys)
    • Joystick

This game was developed using Beebasm assembler and a slightly modified version of B-Em. It has also been tested in BeebEm and JSBeeb. I have not tested it on real hardware so any feedback regarding this would be appreciated.

GENERAL RETRO CHIT CHAT / Happy new year

Just thought I'd drop by and wish everyone here a happy new year.

even though we all like retro, we can still look forward to a happy and prosperous 2017 :-)

Over the last few months (in my spare time) I've put together a little intro for the RCM.

This is fully coded using WinUAE so I could really do with someone to test this for me on real Amiga hardware (it should work on all Amigas from 512k A500 upwards).

In particular disk loader routines and keyboard routines in the end part are areas I'd like to confirm are working OK on real Amiga hardware.

I've attached a zip of the ADF file here. If anyone is able to test this for me I would be most grateful.

Also feel free to comment on the intro - although don't be too scathing of my design as i worked on this purely by myself without any graphic artists and my skills are definitely as a coder rather than a designer.

I've been a fan of this site for a while. I originally found out about you when saw the exhibit at Snibston discovery museum.

I did come to the valentines day retro gaming weekend at Snibston earlier on in the year.

I'm a software engineer working on mostly web based applications nowadays but i started off back in the 8 bit days. I've always been interested in programming so i started off aged 13 with an Acorn Electron. I then moved up to a 128k Spectrum and then onto the Amiga. This is where i was most active and where i find the most nostalgia. I had an A500, A1200 and two A4000's between 1990 and 1998.

I was active on the Amiga warez scene around 1993 - 1996. I still like to keep up with the folks at EAB and Flashtro.com and if i have some spare time to contribute where i can.

Some years later i was also active on the GBA scene for a while doing trainers.

More recently I've contributed to a few open source projects here and there and developed a couple of javascript based emulators of my own
