GAMING . . . / Jag-is-20
« on: December 09, 2013, 10:32:34 AM »
Hi folks,

in the last six weeks or so I’ve spent quite a time with the Jag. The biggest time since my hardcore Jag gaming days in 1995-1998. Most of the recent non-gameplay activities resulted in videos for the Jag-is-20 bash. The last video ATARI JAGUAR Collection 2013 - Part 3: My (hi-)story http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtXpA96DnnU, in which I tell my Jag (hi-)story, went online yesterday and marks the end of my Jag-is-20 activities. The ATARI JAGUAR - 20th Anniversary 2013 playlist http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQHAWWG2O0e3aGNyo6FmwhfAwvOEerDoN consists of  21 videos. That’s it from me concerning the anniversary. Well, I have this huge collection of video footage which would make a great Making of. Maybe one day…

Hi folks,

in late 2001, early 2002 SAMSUNG used Switzerland as a test market for the ARIES3 based N504 NUON Enhanced DVD Player. This is the more developed PAL/Region2/230V version of the much more common N501 NTSC/Region1/110V unit which was sold in the US. The front panel looks like the N501 (having two controller ports), the back panel has SCART (AV), Analog Audio L/R, Video Out, S-Video Out, Digital Audio Out Optical and Digital Audio Out Coaxial.

As I’m Swiss, a JAGUAR/NUON enthusiast since day one and a collector I came across quite a few of those beasts over the last decade. Analysing the serial numbers off all units I’ve seen so far I estimate that only about 1500 units were made and sold. They are ultra-rare!

On my old school JAGUAR/NUON webpage are 3 easter-eggs (hidden links). Two of them show my stockpile of N504 units. Explore even if you can’t read/understand the German. Here’s the link:
http://www.qlvsjaguar.homepage.bluewin.ch/Jaguar.html

I regularly take one of my spares to the E-JAGFEST where we enjoy playing Tempest 3000, Iron Soldier 3, Merlin Racing and other games. This year I was asked by some friends if I could sell my spares. I’ve made my mind and decided that it’s time to let them go. Two are already gone to German JAGUAR community friends. Currently I have two spare units (player, remote control) left. Both are fully functional and in great optical condition. Both units have been codefree enabled and now play both region 2 and 1 DVDs. Here are two pictures of those systems:
http://sdrv.ms/1cYfo4v

I don’t want to list the remaining units in ebay (fees and hassle) but would accept enquiries from community members by PM. Based on the number and type of enquiries I will then make an offer.

Make yourself a present and get one of those ultra-rare gems. Great for both collectors and gamers. Once those are gone it is very unlikely any more coming to surface.

Cheers, Urs

Hi folks,

just wanted to report that the next issue of the QL Today magazine is under preparation. It will have 48 pages and will come with a bonus DVD filled with 4.7GB of Sinclair QL related documents, software and pictures. All issues of QL Today ever published over the last 17 years (including the next one itself, giving a total of 123 magazines) will be on the DVD in digital form (searchable PDFs) and as a surprise: QPC2 Version 4 (a very powerful QL emulator) will be on the DVD - thanks to Marcel Kilgus (its author) - in full version. Plus loads of other material.

Jochen Merz (the publisher) has reduced the subscription rate on http://smsq.j-m-s.com - if you don't want to miss issue 4 and the DVD, then you can still "subscribe" to the current volume and get all 4 issues in one go as soon as it is ready. Please note that the latest date to place your order is the 30th of August – Jochen needs to know the total print run by then.

So don't miss the very final issue! Who knows, it may well be a collector's item in some years - and one thing is for sure: there won't be many!

QL forever!

GENERAL RETRO CHIT CHAT / Retro-Computing/-Gaming Picture Gallery release.
« on: December 12, 2012, 05:19:22 PM »
Lucerne, 12.12.2012 – For immediate release

Today is a very special day. It’s the last day - at least for this century - on which day, month and year (short form 12.12.12) are the same numbers. It will take “us” more than 88 years until January 1st 2101 where the world will have the next date with the same logic (01.01.01), but only if the world will not end on 21.12.12. ;-)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_phenomenon

To celebrate this very special day - I mean today, not the 21st ;-) - I decided to spend some time and bring another long running retro-computing project to an (intermediate) end. The “Sinclair QL Picture Gallery” (SQPG) version 3.10 is to be released today. It consists of 1693 exclusive pictures in 68 folders and is available as an online experience on my cloud based SkyDrive web-presence. Details and links can be found on the “Sinclair QL Preservation Project“ (SQPP) webpage and on my QLvsJAGUAR YouTube channel.
http://tinyurl.com/sqpp25

For those interested in more general Sinclair- and Retro-Computing/-Gaming, please notice that there are specific Picture Galleries for Sinclair (Microvision, ZX range, C5, Z88, etc.), Computers (Amstrad, Apple, ATARI, Commodore, DEC, NeXT, SUN), ATARI JAGUAR, NUON and other Video Games. Just open the Picture Gallery using the 3rd link on the top right side on my YouTube channel.
http://www.youtube.com/QLvsJaguar

Take your time, surf by and enjoy the images. You better do this in the coming days to make sure not missing something. You know, just in case the world ends next week. ;-)

Always remember: “QL forever!

Have a great holiday season, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Cheers, Urs

Hi folks,

it’s a bit silent here nowadays…

I hope you are all well if not great and enjoy the pre-Christmas time. Here in snowy Switzerland (see PIC in link below) days are perfect for some QL tinkering.

Some days ago I stumbled over this web-articles on “The Thorn EMI Liberator: the first British laptop”:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/11/12/the_secret_history_of_liberator_the_first_british_laptop_part_one/
http://www.reghardware.com/2012/11/14/the_secret_history_of_liberator_the_first_british_laptop_part_two/
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/11/16/the_secret_history_of_liberator_the_first_british_laptop_part_three/

It’s an interesting read, Dragon and Sinclair computers as the QL and Spectrum got a mention, keep in mind that the UK made QL’s and part of the Spectrum pile was produced at Thorn (EMI) Datatech in Feltham and that Sinclair’s last computer - the 1987 Cambridge Computers Z88 - has many similarities to the Liberator.

Have a great holiday season.

Cheers, Urs

Hi folks,

the video of the "hardware panel talk" held on Saturday September 8th 2012 at the "Spectrum 30" show in the Cambridge Campus of the Anglia Ruskin University is now available on my YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/QLvsJaguar

This very unique event featured Rick Dickinson (the former Sinclair Research industrial designer), Simon Goodwin (the former Spectrum, QL, AMIGA crack, software author and author of many UK magazine articles in the 80s and early 90s) and Chris Smith (the author of the ultimate 21st century electronic geek book in Spectrum hardware (re-)design).

The video is 1 hour 7 minutes long. So, take a beer, sit down and relax. Enjoy!

Cheers, Urs

HARDWARE/SYSTEMS DISCUSSION / The Sinclair Microdrive Nightmare
« on: June 30, 2012, 09:40:14 AM »
Hi folks,

following the “Sinclair ZX Spectrum - 30th Birthday Anniversary 2012 - The Movie” and the series of “Sinclair ZX Spectrum 1983 System Test ROM Cartridge” videos I had this intention to produce more videos in that line. Next topic would be the “Sinclair ZX Spectrum 1983 Microdrives in use”. I had the plot ready, setup of the scene completed and up we go. Everything looked so nice and started in peace. But then...

The Microdrive, the ill-fated “mass” storage system invented in 1982/1983 by Sinclair Research Ltd for use with their Sinclair ZX Spectrum and QL and the ICL’s OPD personal computers, gave me a nightmare.  :-[

See it here: "The Sinclair Microdrive Nightmare - part 1"

Enjoy the summer weekend!

GAMING . . . / Sinclair ZX81 PSION SPACE RAIDERS 1982 30th anniversary
« on: April 16, 2012, 08:02:06 AM »
For more than 20 years my ZX81 stuff was stored at different places in my parents attic. Back in 2009 I’ve collected all what I could find. What I was missing was my Memotech 64K RAM pack and my Tape-Recorder. I’ve found the empty boxes of them but not the units. My parents had no clue about the missing parts... :-(

Earlier this year my father asked me "Son, is this your missing tape-recorder?" Gotcha!

I've had some days off over Easter 2012. As the weather was not favouring any other outdoor activities than "Singing in the rain" I took the chance and was rebuilding my ZX81 system including my (newly found) tape-recorder for the first time since around 1986. It was quite a task, as out of my four ZX81’s and five 16K RAM packs only one each remain in working condition. And the tape-recorders head needed a cleaning job first. Finally I gave a 30 years old tape a go and was fascinated of the ZX81 again. What followed was a quick grab for my camera and recording the event to leave a legacy. Enjoy watching gaming history!

GENERAL RETRO CHIT CHAT / E-JAGFEST 2011 in Germany (review)
« on: November 22, 2011, 06:39:27 PM »
Hi folks,

back from the E-JAGFEST - a 1400km round trip - I had those pictures and video snippets. What to do with them? Hmmm...

In Today's lunch break (well, in the end it was the lunch break plus almost the whole afternoon) I gave it a go and edited this video for you folks. Enjoy!

In fact I have 3 edits of the video for you. They only differ in their audio mix. The one which gets the most views/thumb ups will become the public version, the others will probably remain unlisted.

GENERAL RETRO CHIT CHAT / Huge Sinclair repository on DVD out now!
« on: September 15, 2011, 06:31:22 PM »
This summer I volunteered to work on a Sinclair related retro computing DVD which is out now. The DVD holds searchable PDFs of all issues (15 years, 1996-2011) of QL Today magazine, plus as Bonus Material seven software, documentation and picture collections which were previously only available on CD-ROMs or on web picture galleries. Plus there’s a copy (mirror) of the biggest QL related website. All in all gigabytes of information for you to discover.

Even though the Sinclair QL is the main topic, both the QL Today magazine and the Bonus Material cover other Sinclair (ZX) and Retro Computing aspects as well. Articles by Rick Dickinson (Sinclair Research Ltd. Industrial Designer January 1980 - April 1987), Tony Tebby (Sinclair Research Ltd. System Software Designer 1982-1984, author of Qdos), Simon N Goodwin (remember his many articles in the 80s computer magazines and software like the ZIP-compiler for the ZX Spectrum) are just a few hot-spots to name here.

The DVD is only available together with a one year subscription of the current volume (4 issues) of the QL Today magazine. The QL Today DVD 2011 and the first issue of volume 16 are ready to ship now (http://smsq.j-m-s.com/). For more information and subscription information please visit the magazine’s website (http://www.qltoday.com/). There’s a sample issue available as PDF for you to download and try.

GENERAL RETRO CHIT CHAT / Recently on German Television...
« on: July 19, 2011, 12:24:33 PM »
Hi all,

on July 10th the final issue of "neues" (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neues) was broadcasted on 3sat, a German-Austrian-Swiss television channel. In the final show they reviewed their history of almost 20 years alongside the ICT developments during that period. ATARI got a mention. Watch this (at 13m44s):
