Hi Folks,

I have decided to pass on a couple of my old faithful Macs.

There is an original Bondi blue iMac with matching keyboard and mouse and a eMac in all it's majesty.

10% goes to the RCM so please take a look and see if you can find a space in your heart and front room for either of these worthy machines.

FOR SALE / WANTED / For Sale. Osborne 1
« on: January 29, 2014, 07:51:44 PM »
Hi Folks,

I've decided to let my Osborne 1 go.

The case is a little shabby with patched where labels have been and the leather of the handle complete perished and so there is just the metal lugs. That's the bad news.

The good news is it runs :-) I have the original diskettes and also a copy of the Kermit comms problem that makes moving files onto it a lot easier - just a serial link to a PC.

As you probably know there are shedloads of software for vintage CP/M-80 machines so thinking of something to run won't be a problem.

I'm asking £110 for it. I may consider an interesting swap (Kaypro or Exidy Sorcerer anyone?)

Drop me a PM if you're interested.

Cheers,

Andy.

GAMING . . . / New C64. Where to start?
« on: October 27, 2012, 07:57:41 PM »
Hi folks,

I have just acquired my first ever C64 :-) and now I have a couple of questions...

I only have a cassette deck. Is it possible to use a cassette adapter and play it WAVs?
If so, where's a reliable source?
What's the best, in your opinion, space blaster, "Moon Crester", "Pheonix"y type game?

Thanks,

Andy.

GAMING . . . / Star castle ported to the 2600
« on: April 26, 2012, 09:45:23 PM »
How about this for a story...

Quote
In 1981 a young Howard Scott Warshaw, left his first programming job at HP for a more interesting job at Atari.  His first assignment was to create an Atari 2600 conversion of the vector coin op game Star Castle...

Well now it's finally been done.

Apologies to those who've know for ages ;-)

GENERAL RETRO CHIT CHAT / What's the best way to bring up old kit?
« on: March 27, 2012, 09:18:50 PM »
Hi Chums,

I've just picked up an old 8080 based business machine from 1981 (8" floppies :-) ) that the previous owner assures me hasn't been turned on in at least 20 years. Can I do anything to increase its chance of survival or do I just plug it in and hope for the best?

cheers,

Andy.

HARDWARE/SYSTEMS DISCUSSION / Sticky Amstrad PenPad PDA600
« on: December 13, 2011, 10:01:46 PM »
Hi Folks,

I have an Amstrad PenPad PDA600. When I got it it was mint. However the rubbery paint has now gone sticky (as most do) and I don't know what to do for the best.

It seems that they've all done this. It's got to the point that it's completely unusable because the finish comes off on your hands.

I'm thinking of just stripping it down, getting so acetone on the paint and taking it back to the plastic and putting it back together. At least then I can use it again.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks,

Andy.

Hi Folks,

I've come to the conclusion that repairing my Amstrad PCW9512 is a bit beyond me. It occasionally boots but mostly spins the disk drive.

Can anyone in the Leicester area help please? If so drop me a PM. I'm not looking for a freebie here, willing to pay.

Thanks,

Andy.

HARDWARE/SYSTEMS DISCUSSION / Osborne-1 progress.
« on: March 15, 2011, 08:50:25 PM »
What ho! folks,

I thought I'd post a bit of any update.

As some of you know I've recently become the chuffed owner of an Osborne-1. When I first fired it up it rattled the disk drives and filled the screen with perfectly formed rubbish. It was scanning the CRT and putting up characters but they were gibberish.

An inspection of the motherboard showed a cap that had blown up. When I replaced it I saw a sign on message but couldn't go any further. If I had the keyboard in it would constantly reset, without it it would sit, not quite accessing the drives.

Time for more investigation. With a machine of this age you've got to suspect the PSU an sure enough there is a problem. The -12v line is showing -0.2V. So there's one of the problems. There may be others but fixing/replacing the PSU is my next task.

Anyone good with switch mode PSUs (astec ac8151). It looks terribly scary :-|

Cheers,

Andy.
