« on: April 28, 2011, 09:02:51 AM »
Today the Marvel Studio movie THOR premieres in theatres around Europe. While this motion picture is from the studio that brought you "Iron Man", the "Iron Man" himself brings you an exclusive unseen scene. Enjoy!

GENERAL RETRO CHIT CHAT / Today, 25 years ago (III)
« on: March 31, 2011, 06:34:32 PM »
Hi folks

Some days ago I opened an old ring binder searching for a specific document. As it turned out it was the wrong binder. By accident my eyes discovered old program listings of my early Sinclair QL work. The earliest listing dates March 1986. So there we have it. Another 25th anniversary!

Picture (sorry for the long URL):

GENERAL RETRO CHIT CHAT / Own a Mac?
« on: March 08, 2011, 08:28:47 AM »
Do you own a Mac?

Turning 43 this May I grew up with ATARI, Commodore and Sinclair in the 80’s. While loved to program in BASIC, I’ve dreamt of owning a Mac, later of owning a NeXT. But in the early 90’s I went the Microsoft (Windows) route for the sake of my job (software engineer) becoming an expert in Microsoft Visual Studio. It took me 20 years to get my first Mac (a Macintosh Plus for my retro computer collection) and even 25 years to get my first “Mac” for my day-by-day usage, the iPhone 3GS.

Currently my workhorse is a 2007 Lenovo Thinkpad X61s (Core2Duo L7500, 4GB RAM, 240GB SSD). Even this little lightweight beast is more than 3 years old it is still a cool one (for me).

Maybe one day my notebook will be a MacBook. Currently I’m thinking of making myself a present in the form of the iPad2.

Hmmm, ”own a Mac”… This reminded me of an old (1987) Apple Computer, Inc. promotional video tape. Last weekend it was the right time to resurrect it and share it with the community. Enjoy watching it!

Hi folks,

I'm about to sell my NUON gaming system on eBay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/NUON-Bundle-Samsung-DVD-N504-Iron-Soldier-3-Gamepad-/230555421919?pt=de_entertainment_games&hash=item35ae2c8cdf

History behind the NUON:
The NUON technology was the successor of the ATARI JAGUAR and was first presented at the E3 show in 1998 (or was it 1997) under the name PROJECT X. The JAGUAR was developed for ATARI by Flare. At that time ex Sinclair Research employee Richard Miller headed R&D at ATARI. After the Sinclair Research sell-out to Amstrad in 1986 Mr. John Mathieson, Mr. Martin Brennan and Mr. Ben Cheese founded a company called Flare which was to develop video game computers. Although the company found limited short term success with chipsets, the concept of a complete system never evolved. Later, Mr. Cheese would go on to design the Nintendo Super FX chip. Mr. Mathieson and Mr. Brennan would become "the co-fathers" of the Atari Jaguar.

So you can see the NUON in the genealogical tree ZX Spectrum, LC3, LOKI, Flare One, Konix Multisystem, JAGUAR, NUON, some NVIDIA chipset logic.

Up for auction is a bundle consisting of:
- Samsung DVD-N504 NUON Interactive DVD Player (region code 2, 220/230V), the remote controller, the manual, the original box. Yes, it's the rare PAL thing.
- Interactive DVD holding the Iron Soldier 3 game (no manual, just the DVD in the shell).
- Iron Soldier 3 game manual as PDF (28 pages).
- Warrior NUON Gamepad, complete with plastic box.

This is all you need to start your NUON experience!

All is in very good condition.

Cheers, Urs

Finally the video footage has been catalogued, ordered, brushed up (video noise, audio volume), edited and became a final directors cut. Then the 24 video slices had to be uploaded to my YouTube channel. All this took much more human and processing power than expected. The videos of the 8 sessions are online for public viewing now! Just browse down the events webpage until you’ll see the fire and enjoy the easy navigation through the YouTube video playlist. There’s more than 5 hours of video footage for you to enjoy.

Those who did not attend the event can now "attend" the show in webcast format.

Hi folks,

this October I released 6 more videos on YouTube; Two covering the ATARI JAGUAR and FLASHBACK (Mini 7800), four covering the Sinclair QL.
http://www.youtube.com/user/QLvsJaguar#g/u

A propos Sinclair QL; Today it's exactly one year since we had the great "QL & Mac are 25" international show in Lucerne, Switzerland. One of the recently uploaded QL videos is the "History of the QL" presentation shown at the events exhibition. BTW: The event website with pictures and presentations is still online.

Happy Halloween, Urs

Two famous ex QL’ers who made a difference in the IT world met at LinuxCon in Sao Paolo, Brazil recently. On a spare minute at an excursion to the Sao Paolo zoo they had a chat about their experiences with the Sinclair QL. This has been filmed by Jeremy and the video is on YouTube now. Watch it!

(third video under Favorites)

BTW: End of last year I set up a web page about Linus's QL contribution GMOVE.

Jeremy’s QL best known QL contributions are ARC and PDQC which are still available in many QL PD libraries.

Dear all,

Summer holidays are over now (at least for me). During this summer

Dear all,

it has been a while since aftermath II (April) of the "QL & Mac are 25" show which was held on Oct 31-Nov 1, 2009. The remaining hard job to do was (in fact it still is) the video editing and cutting.

Well, after some other folks uploaded some nice Sinclair QL related videos recently I got motivated to do my job and started editing and cutting of the raw footage I’ve collected at the show last autumn.

My recent "QL & Mac are 25" show uploads are:

"The Animated Head" 3D demo 1988

Anton Preinsack produced this nice video of the Austrian show:

Don't forget the have another look at Linus Torvalds (the creator of the Linux kernel) GMOVE software blitter for the QL on the QL-is-25 webpage. URL is:
