Are you talking about the old-old PC joysticks that used to plug into the sound/gaming cards ?

If so I beleive I have a joypad somewhere with that very connector on, will check and if so, another adaptor may be required  ;)

I know I'm going to regret saying this but...

You are aware that PC joysticks can be used on a BBC Micro, subject to a rewiring adapter?

i.e. The connections are the same, just a different pin out. A suitable adapter to allow a PC joystick (of the old analogue type rather than USB, obviously) could be made from around 8 wires and two 15-way D connectors...

Have you got a link to the configuration of this adapter. Tempted to make one for myself!

I'll see if I can post a diagram later.

Basically, a joystick consists of two potentiometers strung between VREF and GROUND. The slider of the potentiometer connects to the channel input. On the PC, there is no VREF, but instead there are +5V lines, so you use these instead.

The buttons are active high and simply connected through the button switches between +5V/VREF and the button input.

The PC pins are actually labelled up as joystick X and joystick Y, where as on the BBC they are generically referred to as Channel 1 and Channel 2. The PC pinout is freely available on www.hardwarebook.info. The BBC pinout can be found at the BBC documentation project in the BBC Micro User guide download.

With four transistors and eight resistors, you could make an Atari 2600-type adapter too...

Please can you make me one as well. It would be good to have a joystick on my beeb at RV2010, even though only a handful of games support them. If anyone has any spare PC joystick that would also be useful, as I think I threw all my old ones out (they were naff anyways!). I can also pay at the RCM event or can paypal gift. Whatever is easier.

I know I'm going to regret saying this but...

Sorry it was my fault for suggesting it  :)

If it is possible to make an adaptor to connect a D plug joystick (atari 2600 etc..) then I would not mind paying extra for the four transistors and eight resistors (and any other parts) to make it. I would rather use a speedking or 2600 joystick than a PC joystick  :)
