Retro Game Related Places to Visit
« on: March 21, 2010, 05:17:40 PM »
Recently I have sat on a weekend looking for places to go and always wished there was an easily accessible list of game-shops that sell old games, as well as places of interest. However as I have not been able to find such a list I decided to start my own.

Places to visit in Bristol.

The Gamescene UK franchise: http://www.gamesceneuk.com/ (Keynsham branch best for old games)
The Pink Planet franchise: http://www.pinkplanetgamesexchange.com/ (Gloucester Road branch best for old games)

Places to visit in London.

Funland Arcade - http://www.funland.co.uk/

Here are a few more:

Bletchley Park (Milton Keynes)
http://www.bletchleypark.org.uk/

Museum of Computing (Swindon)
http://www.museumofcomputing.org.uk/

Pinball Parlour Museum (Ramsgate, Kent)
http://www.pinballparlour.co.uk/about.htm

Under The Pier Show Arcade (Southwold, Suffolk)
http://www.underthepier.com/

The Centre For Computing History (Haverhill, Suffolk)
http://www.computinghistory.org.uk/pages/176/About-the-Museum/

I have never been to any of these. I will one day, or perhaps if a jolly with other people/forums could be organised...

If you do want to visit the museum in Haverhill, give me a shout. Bit manic there at the moment with the preparations for Gadget Show live but after that should be fine.

There's one in Amsterdam .. but it's soooo expensive (compared to over here) for the simple stuff like Master System games.  I walked in, laughed at the prices, and walked back out again.

If you want bargains and are taking an empty suitcase, then the Retroborse in Bochum is worth a weekend away.  Even more so if you want the cheap Japanese games for PC Engine, Sega Saturn & Dreamcast.  Average prices are 3 to 4 Euros.  Which at the current exchange rate isn't good, but wait until the Euro drops in value and it becomes a good trip :)

Just a pity I can't go this year ... :(

OK this one is in Germany, but I'd say it's worth the trip - the retro arcade run by Lenno and Christian in Karlsruhe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeNII9ZHTAI .. like going back in time!

Cheers

+1 for Flicky's suggestion.  An excellent place to visit.  Was there for EuroConn 2008 - up til the wee small hours playing arcade classics (all on freeplay) and with a DJ playing 80s classics (but none of that Stock Aitken & Waterman stuff).  Excellent night.
