Review : GameGadget
« on: April 05, 2012, 01:06:02 PM »
Thought I would share this with you . . . pre-ordered a GameGadget and it arrived today (on time too). Good so far? :)
I have GameGadget console number 0022 . . . still good?

First impressions:-
Box is very well designed and manufactured, manual is concise and well written, letter of introduction is excellent, good headphones and AV cable (for plugging into TV) all good.
Handheld itself is a good size but not too big - not as well manufactured as a DS but still pretty solid. Screen is very clear indeed. In the letter they mention there is a bug with the sound, when you first turn the gamegadget on you have to have the headphones plugged in. This, they are hoping, will be fixed in a firmware update asap.

Plugged into my Mac and as mentioned in the manual and gone to the website. This is where a small issue starts - the software to Activate is not available yet . . . so the machine itself is unusable . . . little bit disappointed but I can wait.

Bonus bits . . . 30 free games if you buy it now and of course £20 off too. So £80 for 30 Mega Drive games is not so good but . . . I will update this when the software is available and let you know what is what then . . .

Overall pretty good so far . . . updates later.

Andy

well . . . what a mixed bag this is . . . waited two weeks and now can finally use it . . . :)

First impressions were average - the 30 games are pretty much run of the mill stuff.
However, I have now copied several (!) megadrive games to the SD card and yep they are ALL playable. This feature may be taken out in future releases as they want you to BUY them all.
Lots of things promised . . . only time will tell . . . at the moment I would give it 6/10 . . . :)

Price drop as of 27th April to £60.  Might be interested now (got some Amazon vouchers due for 5 years' service) so it'd only "cost" £10 once Amazon drop their price (it's still £99).

But selling the games at £3 a pop - no chance!

However, If it's been hacked then it becomes a lot more use.

What's the maximum SDHC size Andy?  Got a few (!) 8gb and 16gb SDHC cards that could be used.

How much Lunix (smelling pistake intentional) knowledge is needed? Mainly because I can't stand that OS :)  Every emulator under the sun that has a Lunix port will work?  Or does the 320x240 screen resolution limit what's usable and what's not?

From what I can see Mike - it is going to go mental 'homebrew' wise . . . already very impressed with the 'SANDBOX' mode - basically boots into Linux (various flavours already) - I don't have any large SD cards at the moment but again from what I can see it will take pretty much any new card - must be formatted (new fresh format) to FAT32 in windows! and must be SDHC. You will need a basic knowledge of Linux (very basic) but don't let it put you off.

Already played DOOM - very impressive - full speed - no blurring . . . looking forward to what they do next with it. Still a few issues to sort out but when they do - amazing I guess? I have signed up as a developer - need to re-install linux on my mac sometime to see what it going on . . . :)

Turns out the £50 may not be paid out on (or near) the date of my 5th anniversary.  Might have to wait until Xmas for it - but sod turning up to the Xmas party to pick it up though.

currently playing LOTS of emulators . . . Amstrad CPC, PSOne etc . . . they run reasonably fast - none for some reason have sound at the moment tho' - won't take them long to tweak them . . . ;)

PS - It gets better as time goes on . . .

If I saw one of those at the car boot I'd probably think it was half a DS lite and skip past it lol
