Worst mistake made while collecting...
« on: September 04, 2012, 06:19:05 PM »
Not sure if this has been done before, but what are your biggest collecting regrets? This might be paying way over the odds for something that didn't work, selling something too cheap or just throwing the wrong thing out.

What guts me on a daily basis is that I threw out all the boxes for my SNES, Gameboy and Amiga games. It wasn't even that long ago (ten years maybe) so I was definitely old enough to know better.  >:(

Edit: as another tale, my friend's "older" parents, threw an Apple II (or Apple II plus) on the tip last year. They had no idea how much they can sell for, and could have used the money at that point too. Poor buggers (and poor Apple).

I had two major regrets:

1. Giving away an Apple Portable to another enthusiast (before I got really serious into collecting).

2. Leaving my old  Personal Computer World magazines in the loft, only to find the roof was leaking water on them for a long while. I'm still on the look out for sanely priced replacements for:

I got a free TRS-80 Model III from the US, just had to pay shipping ~$170 or so. Upon arrival, it had come loose and imploded. Despite the package was insured, USPS didn't want anything to do with it, claiming it was a matter of the Swedish post. Those in turn didn't want anything to do with it, returning it back to USPS. In the end, I had a smashed TRS-80 and a small pile of glass shards in my living room and was $170 lighter. I couldn't stand keeping the computer corpse so I donated it to a friend who didn't mind.

Letting my collecting run away with me .. at one point I didn't have a flat as such, just storage for my collection that I could also sleep in.

Thanks to RCM, I've now got a lot of my flat back and I can enjoy the odds & sods instead of the odds & sods taking over :)

I did that one...... Had a huge collection in the spare bedroom - has taken 6 years to get just some of it back.... Now when space is a premium I just donate stuff I don't use to RCM - that way I can still go and do something with it at some point....

Only really started my collection this year, but over the years I have thrown out full magazine collections of Your Spectrum/Sinclair, loads of Spectrum books/software, which now I really regret since they were my teenage years!
More recently, I had a clear out and skipped some old PCs and cards - mainly 386 and 486 models. The cards would all have been ISA cards. Maybe not that collectable just now, but in a few years...!!!
My parents also skipped my 1950s valve powered reel-reel tape machine, as the audio sounded like it was backwards (I have funny feeling about trying 'reverse-echo' experiments with my electric guitar as a kid!!!!!!!!!!!!) I nearly cried!!!

As I get more into collection I am sure this list will get way bigger :0
