Lenovo A690
« on: December 03, 2012, 01:52:31 PM »
After breaking I think my 15th work blackberry (of which only two were broken by me , rest faulty) my warranty finally ran out ! Decided to get cheap Lenovo android phone to match my Lenovo laptop :)

It was £70 from pandawill. This is my first android phone and so far it seeems like a great phone for the price.

Good Points
£70
Dual Core 1ghz CPU, Not so great GPU apparantly but seems ok so far to me
Nice, very responsive capacitive screen
Wifi / GPS / Bluetooth / G Sensor all work fine
Came with free 4gb SD card

Bad Points
Only 512mb internal memory, half taken up by OS. I have modified the device so that all apps should install to SD card, but a few so far will not installto SD card
Not rooted - not really sure whatthat means lol
So far have been unable to get google play to work, other app stores do though
Lots of chinese apps n stuff installed which I am not sure what they are or do

For the price its a great phone, in hindsight I  should have spent a few more quid and got one with a lot more internal memory

You fail it! Your skill is not enough, see you next time, bye-bye!

Not a phone I'm aware of or heard of but to really get under the phone's hood, rooting it is the first thing to attempt.  Titanium Backup (or whatever other backup solutions are out there) only *really* works once a phone is rooted.

You are currently prevented from seeing any of the system files until your phone is rooted.  Which is probably how the phone manufacturers / phone providers want it so that you can't debloat your phone from whatever 'freebies' they've thrown onto it.  Using something like ROM Toolbox, you can force uninstall these 'extras' if you're never going to use them. That would free up some of your previous 512MB.

Looking on XDA Developers forum for some help on rooting it and, if possible, extending the 512MB to something a little higher might make it a bit more useful apps-wise.

You cannot move every file to the SD.  System apps (i.e. the Google stuff) and the widgets must all run from the internal memory.  There are also, naturally, some apps which won't work at all from SD but the majority work quite happily.

Thanks for the tips, appreciated. As far as I can see there isnt too much bloatwhere on there, it would be nice to have a really clean english Android OS with just all the native android apps, I need to see if there are any other custom Android firmwares available as I know one chinese company produces them.

I'm just hoping it will be more reliable than my previous blackberries !

I had a quick sniff around XDA Developers and nothing jumped out via Google.  But with it running Gingerbread, I would guess it's about a year old, so a lack of anything available to give it a boost does surprise me somewhat.

But welcome to the wonderful world of Android :)

If you do get it rooted I would recommend "Link2SD"

You have to create a partition on your SD and format it, the app them fools android into thinking it's part of the phones memory so it links the app to the SD card but the phone still thinks it is on internal memory...hope that makes sense ???

Thanks for the tip I have seen LinktoSD but I can't root the phone as yet. I have managed to install all apps to SD card, it seems after installing a certain number apps it wont let you install any more though. There are a few apps I'd like to remove but don't think I can until its rooted.

According to this website here it is sold (by them) pre-rooted?

I'm guessing also that because this isn't really sold in the UK (under any other mobile phone shop brand, i.e. my old Orange San Francisco was really a rebadged ZTE Blade) that this could also explain the lack of interest in it.  I found lots of sites offering the same suite of rooting tools *but* no instructions (other than filenames) are in English.

This link seems to show that it might be possible to make your SD card memory be seen as part of the main phone's memory, giving you more space to play about with apps etc.
