The most useful item in your collection?
« on: February 17, 2013, 12:42:31 PM »
I've been thinking about this today - what's the most useful item in your collection for you? If all your modern gear stopped working, and you only had access to one of your retro devices, which would it be?

This isn't about which one is your favourite, or has the most sentimental value - think practical.

If I only played games in my spare time, I'd go with the Nintendo Entertainment System. For my tastes, I need nothing else.

But then I realised that I really spend very little time playing games. I spend most of my free time programming something, bodging together hardware circuits, writing, or on the Internet - so the Apple //e or Amiga 1200 would suffice. (I'm counting my return to the use of BBSs in this theoretical world as an Internet substitute).

Surprisingly, to me, the Apple edges it because of its expansion capabilities which would make it easier for me to do hardware projects with.

Amiga 3000 - Its got everything I need, including VGA, Ethernet and USB connectivity... oh and it plays 90% of the best Amiga games !. Web access may be a bit basic - but email and newsgroups are sorted as is FTP and bittorrent..
