Atari computers and emulation which is best
« on: January 20, 2009, 09:20:38 PM »
Hi guys,
my little bro has been over all weekend playing on my miggy. I have decided to get him a retro computer as a gift for helping me out with some work before xmass. i was thinking of getting him an Atari ST. Can you recommend which one is best, and an emulator I can put on his laptop for him? Also does a device similar to Easy ADF transfer for the miggy  exist for the ST ?
cheers guys

PZ,
I will pass this one over to MugUK - his knowledge of ST stuff is superb!
As for emulation . . . check our links page . . . ;)

PZ,
No problem - the link you actually want is http://leonard.oxg.free.fr/SainT/saint.html
This emulator is superb - if i remember rightly you do need the TOS roms . . . but they can be found on the t'internet :)

Emulators = for all round 95% compatibility it's STEEM.  You can set-up folders on your PC to add as virtual h/drives (none of this h/drive image malarky needed) and will work with most of the games out there.  Just like the Amiga, you change the TOS ROMs to an older one if a game doesn't work.

However, if you're into cycle-accurate emulation and a much better sound-chip emulation then it's SAINT.  Written by a still active ST demo coder, he uses it as a development/test tool for his own demos - including his most recent work with Amiga Demo 2.

Still, nothing beats the original machinery so I'd go for an STE (minimum 1Mb).  If you can afford one, the new SatanDisk (UltraSatan) will allow him to store games etc. on SD cards.  It's a bit steep @ 60 Euros *but* proper ST h/drives go for silly money on ePrey.  With the UltraSatan not due until the summer (pre-ordering is on the go now), you might want to take your chances with eBay though.

Hope this helps.

Yes but only with the help of a RS232 null-modem cable (PC->ST and then write the images back) - but you'll need at least 2MB of RAM. 800K for the image file (or thereabouts) and another 100K for the tool to write the MSA image file back to a floppy disk.

Or someone who's got a wad of menu compilations that he no longer needs once he's made MSA images of them ... ? :)

Will have a dig around and see what spares I've got (probably lots!).  Is it games or demos your brother is going to be interested in most?

The only cost would be postage - unless you're (PZ) going to Byte Back?  If so, I can bring a box of old disks with me if required.  Most could be formatted and used on the Amiga if your brother doesn't want them :)

Not anti-Commodore myself just the Atari ST was the first machine that I paid for out of my own pocket so has been a favourite of mine.  You only have to ask Andy about the Amiga 4000 with various souped up bits inside it that I got for £20 :)

LOL! I love the amiga first but the ST is a close second!
Trouble is really . . . I love the speccy, c64, atari 2600, 800xl etc etc etc etc etc!
You could say really that I sort of have a problem . . . with other people its cigarettes and alcohol, with me its computers/consoles with alcohol thrown in as well! LOL!

Amiga 4000 for £20 . . . we can dream . . . luck sod! Quagmire has a nice one too!

I am sorting out some of the collection this weekend and I will sort out a C64 for you.

Who's the C64 for Andy?  Not me I hope as I gave you two on your last visit? :)

What I've got for you though are two (possibly) C64 rare games that a mate off Retropassion pulled from his eBay sales when I said that I'd scan in the covers / manuals etc. and dump the games to the SD card.  Some "compilation" called Play Four but one of them is a strip-poker game and looks very rare (as in it's not by Anco or the others).
