Title: Machines for May 31st Gaming Event . . .
Post by: AndyRCM on April 06, 2009, 12:42:19 PM
Could you guys please put in this thread what you are willing to bring along (console/computer wise):-
It is taking longer to sort out what RCM is bringing than I originally anticipated, as I am still sorting the machines out! :(

Thanks . . .

possibly Acorn Archimedes A3010 (if I can get the hard drive to work, it'd be nice ;) ) or Atari STE with 4MB RAM & Hard Drive

Take your pick from any of the following. I can probably fit 6-8 systems/games in the car easily but only 3 or 4 TVs...

Atari 2600
Atari Jaguar
Commodore 64
Commodore Amiga 600
Funtech Super A'Can (maybe - I may sell this before the event)
Microsoft XBOX
MSX
NEC PC-Engine

Nintendo SNES
Nintendo Super Famicom
Philips CD-i
Prinztronic Tournament 6 (Pong thing)
Sega Dreamcast (mine is a bit temperamental though!)

Sharp Twin Famicom
SNK Neo Geo AES
Sony Playstation
Sony Playstation 2
Vectrex
Various plug and play TV games (Namco, Street Fighter II, Star Wars, C64 etc)

I also have lots of gimmicky peripherals such as Samba De Amigo maracas, Gamecube Bongos, full Rock Band setup for the PS2, Lightguns for several systems, Saturn multitaps and pads for Bomberman etc

and your white Saturn please, if that is okay?

I think maybe up to four systems per person would be the best! :)

No problem, EXCEPT... Each of the Japanese systems will need a 60Hz capable TV, and I think I only have two - I'll check though as I may be able to sort a third out. If not I could bring a PAL Saturn with import enabler cartridge in.

Don't forget I will need to make use of some of the systems for this competition I have planned. I can bring some of those too if necessary. Looks like you don't have a NES or BBC Micro lined up at the moment, though I assume Dave Moore will be supplying at least a couple of Beebs...

I'm supposed to be getting a BBC Micro off someone I know, which he's giving me @ RCM .... all going to plan, you can use that (you'll have to supply the games though, as I don't know what games you have planned, or if I even have them)

As for the NES, if no-one else is bringing one, I could bring mine ...... I don't want to bring too many systems though, it's not the systems that's the problem, more the TVs ..... I only have about 3, possibly 4 TVs that can be used.

The games are those listed in the poll.. Looks like it will be Chuckie Egg on the Beeb. But don;t worry about it, Dave will bring a Beeb with an MMC card thing attached so we'll use that.

I'll bring my NES with a TV that is perfect for it, if nobody else can supply one. I still have more than half a dozen TVs left over from Byte Back! ;)

The list from RCM isnt finalised yet . . . I will be bringing a BBC too with Disk Drive (as last time) and we also have a MMC card for one too! Thanks to PhoenixTLB! Just forgot to put it on the list.

@Woodycool - don't think we really need a 16k speccy? okay?

@Witchfinder - we do have a NES - but I can't really bring everything - it would mean 100+ systems! ;)

Dave Moore is bringing several Beebs to network I think - I have left that with him.

No worries, I'll bring mine. You should try and spread the responsibility for bringing kit out so it isn't so hectic for you on the day... It won't work though, as I found with Byte Back! ;)

Can't you say that about the Amstrad too?!  ;D

All being well, will bring my STE (4MB) with the SdiskEmul installed in it. With the PesT (PS2 mouse adapter) and JeST (PSX joystick adapter) plugged in.  And an SD card chock full of games/demos etc. that can be loaded via the SDiskEmul.

Don't have anything that hasn't already been mentioned as coming already Andy, but happy to help in any other way I can on the day or before.

Also noticed earlier today that you were asking for help on F/B with getting stuff sorted in the new store - if you still need help there I can volunteer for that. I live about 45 mins or so away though, so best when you need half a day + of help, rather than an odd half hour.

Oooh, old PC games. This is an area I definitely want to revisit! :D

A few games I recall loving back in the day:

Captain Comic
Jill of the Jungle
One Must Fall (like Rise of the Robots, but it was actually playable! ;))

Would they all run on a 286?

I may have to bring my 386 and/or 486 as well by the looks of it. Some of the games suggested will need a slightly faster machine.

If anyone else takes a PC, maybe a 2 play game of Doom over serial cable!  :P

The room in my car is vanishing quite quickly!
I do have a couple of old DOS 486 PCs
I could get DOOM on one of them and bring it to RCM

Does any of your old PCs have a network card? Both of my old 486's have a network card (and properly confiugred MS LAN Manager for DOS software) so for quicker gameplay, could do the two player thing over LAN (just need a hub/switch or a crossover cable)

I can bring LAN cables, switches etc. My 286 only has BNC at the moment...

I'll dig both of my 486's out over the easter holiday, make sure all the LAN manager stuff is on them and get DOOM up and running.

Which protocol is best for you? NetBEUI or TCP/IP?
(I'll also make sure the serial ports work, just in case ;) )

This looks like I'm bringing a PC :D

Hi,

I should be able to bring a carload with me :)

Regarding IPX for Doom, I've done this before so I can probably lay my hands on some software for this if anyone else is struggling.

I also have copies of the aforementioned Duke Nukem 1 & 2 if needed.

I'll be bringing along the home-made ZX Spectrum+ 48K (see other thread about the RM Nimbus for details), and probably the two joysticks I have.

Would my Master 128 with HD-full-o-games be welcomed?

My Sega Master System, Megadrive and Super Nintendo are all modified for RGB out. I can bring these if they would be of use.

Lastly, I have monitors/TVs I can bring if needed - RGB (TV Scan) monitor, SGI 13w3 monitor, my really nice Philips SCART monitor, and a 14" SCART enabled telly.

Oh, and if anyone needs any obscure cables making up, let me know. Cables are a specialty :)

Andy: I've got a spare Acorn mouse here if you need one for the A3020 and don't manage to find one.

The idea for RCM is to get all things retro, so I'm not sure about the Wii or the PS3 at the moment (although we did have a Xbox360 last time!!).
and finally . . . nice try with the tokens but you need at least 80 tokens (lol!).

@ AndyT: Which version of Doom do I need to install (Doom, Doom II, Final Doom)

I have both. Also have the IPX boot disk made. Is your card NE2000 compatable? Should be able to share the driver disk then. Also, are we going BNC or Cat5? I have both switches and plenty of coax and terminators here.

IPX is a network protocol like TCP/IP. IPX was very common on older Novell Netware networks.

Hi, my card is NE2000 compatible.
The only problem is, the floppy drive controller is buggered :( so can only boot from hard drive.

CAT5 would be best, but I'll also bring a serial null-modem cable, just in case the network doesn't work.

Saying that, I have another 486 I can use, I could just put the NE2000 card in that instead.

Right, I dug my old machines out over the weekend.
I got Doom, Doom II, Heretic and Wolfenstein 3D installed on the hard drives of the working ones!

1. My older 486 works fine, but only has 8MB RAM and the floppy drive refuses to work .... replacing the floppy drive didn't work either so suspect internal floppy drive controller failure .... the CD-ROM, Network card, Sound card and Hard Drive all work as expected.

2. My much better 486 (quite highly specced for a 486 as well) seems to be buggered. I cannot get the BIOS to remember it's settings. There's no signs of a BIOS/CMOS battery either (so suspect it's a capacitor on board???) - when I set up the HD in the BIOS and reboot, it refuses to boot it (even though it's got the settings !?!) so I suspect it's heading for the skip

3. I stumbled across an old Pentium 2 .... when I powered it up, it just had MS-DOS on it, and nothing else, so I set this up (much in the same manner as my old 486) with network (MS Network Client for DOS), Doom I & II, Hetetic and Wolfenstein 3D etc. Unfortunately I can't get the sound card to work in DOS, but it's no great loss.

So, it looks like all is prepped for some DOOM deathmatches :)

I'll see your 486, and raise you a GenuineIntel P166 with 48Mb of RAM, MSDOS 6.2, network card, mandatory copy of doom, IPX stack and a spare copy of Windows NT 4 on standby...

I believe that counts me in for deathmatch DOOM :)

Well, I'll raise you even more than that ..... I've got a Intel PII (@ 350MHz) with 128MB RAM, multi-booting MS-DOS 6.22, Windows 3.11, Windows 95 and Windows NT 3.51 (lol, you don't see NT 3.51 about much these days :P ) .... got the 3COM 3C905B card working in DOS with IPX and TCP/IP.
Also, I've got my MS-DOS 6.22 set up as a multi-config, so I'll be willing to show anybody who's interested, how to do that.

It'll be cool to get some multi-player DOOM going on ..... iirc, it's 4 players per game ..... can someone confirm this!?!
Anyway, I look forward to seeing your old P166 Richard :) It'll be better than my old 486DX lol :D

Anyway, the games I've installed on both the 486 and the PII are: DOOM, DOOM II, Heretic, Wolfenstein 3D, Lotus, Zool, Worms and Super Street Fighter II.
(it's just a damn shame I can't get that sound card to work in DOS on the PII)

I plan on bringing the both 486 and the PII (I did have another 486 lined up, but it's knackered) as well as my Amiga 3000.

Quake is definitely 32 players.
As for Doom, I'm going by what options were present on screen when I was looking (remember this is the DOS version)
Maybe the Windows version of Doom (aka Doom95) can do more !?!

Anyway, I booted up the NT 3.51 installation and it's knackered (crashes during loading) so I removed it and am using that partition for miscellaneous data!

Yep, you're right. Maximum 4 players in co-operative or deathmatch mode.

Poo.

What I will do is, on the day, I'll bring a CD with Microsoft Network Client for DOS 3.0 and Microsoft LAN Manager as well as the appropriate IPX protocol stack.

If anybody wants to join in the Deathmatch DOOM with a PC running DOS, all you'll need is a PC running DOS (any variant, preferably MS-DOS 6.22), DOOM installed and DOS drivers for your network card (NDIS2 drivers are best for MS Network Client for DOS and MS-LANMAN used drivers usually located in the MSLANMAN.DOS directory on most network card driver disks)
NOTE: Please avoid MS-DOS 7.x (aka Windows 95/98 DOS mode) as I had real problems with Microsoft Network Client for DOS with Win9x DOS mode .... I don't know why, as it's supposed to be compatible, but I think Windows got in the way and used all the conventional memory (below 640k) before the IPX stack loaded

I've also got a couple of Windows 3.1 games installed on my old PC, so if anybody wants to play something a bit different, that's always an option (I've got SimCity and SimTower installed on there at the moment, but think I have some more Win31 games kicking around)

Another option, although not recommended, is if you have an old PC running Windows for Workgroups 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11, I could configure Windows to load the drivers but remain in a DOS prompt (done by creating a WINSTART.BAT in the C:\WINDOWS folder and putting COMMAND.COM as the last command in the script) but on low memory systems, there may not be enough conventional memory to run Doom (conventional memory is the stuff below the 640k barrier)

Please do let us know exactly what you are bringing . . . otherwise we will run out of room! Would be a nightmare to turn people away with machines! :(

Andy

p.s. could we get this one back on topic too please?

Just gonna be bringing the two PCs and my Amiga 3000
I was thinking of other machines, but other people are bringing those, so it's not worth me duplicating it.

Shall a new thread be created for this DOOM deathmatch idea?

AndyRCM: sorry for the topic drift there mate :)

Don't worry about me re: not enough room for machines. I'll bring what I think its useful (e.g. my DOS box filled with DOS games) and I'll let you and anyone else planning layout decide what you want to use. I don't mind if some kit has to sit the day out in the car :)

I'm bringing myu A3000 which will have Sensi installed on the hard drive.
I'll bring the disks as well though, so you can borrow them if you don't find your own.

Just the opportunity I need to show off my game I've been working on in AMOS :D

Will I be able to use any/all of those highlighted above plus an Amiga for my Retro Game Decathlon competition? If not I need to know as I'll have to sort out bringing some of these myself...

@Witchfinder . . . I would prefer the vectrex not to be used too much! But the rest will not be a problem at all.

Okay?

I'm bringing my Amiga 3000, so you can use that for the decathlon .... however, it's not an AGA machine, so AGA exclusive titles are out the question.
If you really need an AGA machine, I'll bring my A1200 as well.

OK, nice one. I'll bring my Vectrex if you like as it survived Byte Back OK, which I must admit I was worried about! ;)

@woody, the Amiga game looks like being Xenon 2 or Project X so no AGA required...

I can offer you the following to bring...

Apple ][c or //e
Sun SparcStation 20
IBM AT 286

If there are any more machines of mine you would like me to bring, let me know.

I can't bring the Sparc 20 now as its in use at work! (We needed a Sparc based solaris box for some testing)
286 should also be coming with me, along with my 486. Will also get my Apple //c running. Need to make up some games floppies for it. So, I have room for one more machine - any requests? For a list, take a look at http://retrocomputers.wordpress.com/my-computers/

I am not sure if there s any room left for anything else - but is anyone taking a VideoPac G7000 along? If not, and there is interest I can bring mine along with 14" TV and Multigame Cart.

I can also bring my 37" Samsung LCD TV along for the day, if it could be used for anything?

Is there any other systems missing, or might be needed?

RCM will have a Phillips VideoPac G7000 but if you could bring your multi-carts that would be superb! and your TV's will be very handy!
Not sure about the sparcstation - are games available for it? . . . ;)

Thanks again guys!

How many TVs? I also have Six 14" TV (3 which are Flat CRT's) if they all fit in the car, but will need them back for other events and RV. I have a multicart for the Videopac and a Vectrex MultiCart. I also have a Virtual Boy Flash cart, but not sure if anyone is taking a Virtual Boy along? I also have a 1541-III loaded with C64 and C16/+4 Games, but the C16/+4 will need to be next to a C64, as power to run it is drawn from a C64 Tape Deck port. What else might be needed?

I also still have those ST's and Monitors if you still want them Andy?

I'll be bringing the following (mentioned elsewhere in the forum, but might as well put them into the one list):

1) Psion in need of some TLC
2) that Sharp PDA
3) the Interton (German console) and about 6 or so games (a donation from the guys at Retro Borse, Bochum)
3) the Dendy (a Russian built NES clone) and two multi-game carts (probably all the same games but with slightly different graphics/palettes etc.)

The good news is they are all donations.  I bought the Dendy whilst in Latvia along with the two multi-game carts for it, but that's my donation to the cause :)  Had a look on eBay and none exist of the Interton or the Dendy, so that's some USP for RCM :)

@starshipuk - superb mate - yes to all of that - I can get a C16 or a +4 next to a C64 - no problems there! be good to see that baby! ;)
I don't think anybody is bringing a virtual boy! which is a shame! TV's sound good too mate - to borrow for the day is fine! Thank you!
and yes to the STs and Monitors - nice one! ;)

@muguk - all sounds good to me mate - nice one! and thank you for picking things up for us ;)

I swear... not a word of a lie....

On my DOS/WINNT/WIN95/WIN31 box, Microsoft reckons its Windows 3.1 MIDI drivers were made on the 31st of November 1993.

I'll show you the output on Sunday...
