I went to Gamecity last week in Nottingham. It was pretty cool and had some good rooms and installations. The massive missile command was ace! But for retro gaming was left a little underwhelmed. Not that much retro wise to play on and seemed to be a plethora of Wiis and Playstations.  The bar was pretty cool with craft ales and an xbox, psx  and gamecube where you exchange games at the bar.  Not a patch on RCM though for the variety of hands on fun with all RCMs lovely stuff.

HARDWARE/SYSTEMS DISCUSSION / RCMs MSX2 - Finally have games working !
« on: November 15, 2014, 08:58:54 AM »

I have finally managed to get MSX2 games and demos working on the RCM MSX2 using floppys.

Sadly as yet I am unable to get games or demos to play via WAV .. I tried lots of different programs playing converted WAVs with lots of baud rates but still no joy.
You can still play all MSX1 games as WAVs so long as the ROM you convert is less than 32k. It takes around 2 mins max to load a MSX 1 game as a WAV.
I will at some point get an old MP3 player or mobile and load up as many MSX1 WAVs as I can fit on a SD card.

For the MSX2 I just needed a Windows laptop, USB floppy drive, some 720kb DD disks and some excellent software I found called DIsk-Manager
Simply select the DSK image you want to create on floppy and away you go.

Not all DSK images worked, some disks did not autostart so you needed to run the game from MSX basic. Some games and demos need 256k kb memory too, if somebody wants to kindly upgrade the MSX2 please do !

With the disks Andy gave me to test I managed to get some decent games sorted such as the original metal gear and the excellent shooter Space Manbow albeit without sound as it need 256kb memory for sound. I also managed to get 4 player Bomberman (2 keyboard / 2 joystick) working.

If anyone has any MSX game / demo requests please let me know ! There are a few exclusives like Knightmare 2 and Hydefos that I cant get working yet ..

Picked up a 60 doillar 7" tablet for my 4 year old.

1.2 Ghz single core CPU, Mali 400 GPU, 512mb RAM, 4GB rom 3000 MAh battery.

Not bad at all for the price, works fine as long as you dont try and do too much as once. Plays stuff like Bad Piggies etc no problem, not tried any 3d stuff yet. Screen is fairly responsive, viewing angle ok. Found out it has a fm transmitter too which is a bonus. Battery life 3 to 4 hours with wifi ish.

GAMING . . . / Sega Rally on PS2
« on: August 06, 2013, 09:45:07 PM »
After playing Sega Rally on me hols I thought I'd see if there were any other decent home ports other than the excellent Saturn one.

I found the original Sega Rally is available for the PS2 , I have played it and it is a great conversion. It was released with Sega Rally 2006 I think in Asia only.

Need to try it on RCMs Logitechs :)

GENERAL RETRO CHIT CHAT / Loading Games as Wavs on MP4 player
« on: July 13, 2013, 08:39:32 AM »
Just an FYI really .. Picked up a rubbish chinese Mp4 player second hand, build quality is appaling but the sound quality isn't actually that bad.  The good thing is that is can load games as WAVs on my MSX, I will test on my speccy too. So a few quid to have a 8gb WAV loader isnt too bad  ...

REVIEWS (of Hardware) / Wii Arcade Stick for £8
« on: July 01, 2013, 08:12:00 PM »
Recently picked up a Logic 3 arcade stick new for £8 for the Wii to satisify my 2d shooter and fighter fix .

For £8 its good value, its not arcade quality but its not bad and looks like it will stand a bit of abuse. The joystick is microswitched too which is nice. It also works with the iPad with iMame etc and should work with a droid or a pc. I will test it on my pc next, it would be great if I could get it working with SSF which I now have working perfectly on an old Dell laptop.

REVIEWS (of Hardware) / New Lenovo Phone
« on: May 20, 2013, 04:33:40 PM »
Not a review, just an observation of a new model that I now want ! After having my Lenovo phone 6 months I can safely say the quality is great ,the fact I havent broken it (apart from being stupid and bricking it) is amazing.

So for £125 you get
Quad core CPU 1.2 Ghz, Power VR GPU
5" IPS Screen
Dual SIM
GPS / Bluetooth / Wifin
2 cameras 0.3MP  front, 8MP back with flash

I would say spec wise its much better than the equivalent Samsung Ace, or Sony Xperia that you can get for albeit a bit cheaper.

Probably sure all you retro geeks are aware of Gamebase. Had a play over last few days and its a cool way of cataloging games together with working emulators. It seems there are Gamebase databases for most systems.  Its a great way to catalogue your games, artwork,  music etc in one central place.. assuming you own the originals of course !

In case anyone wants a link

Picked up a fat psp for peanuts on gumtree. Got an 8 gb sd card and duo converter for a fiver of flea bay and soft modded it very easily.

So far I have just installed a Mame, msx and pc engine emulator and all fairly impressive. It seems to run them better than my ds which I guess is due to the improved hardware.  What rocks though is the native psx emulation. Einhandar for example plays perfect. Its really easy to convert psx games to psp and they seem to play fine. I was hoping dlna over wifi would work but looks like can only play media from the duo memory, unless you have a ps3.
