DIGITAL PRESERVATION / Re: My magazines (almost all in PDF format)
« Last post by muguk on March 03, 2020, 06:53:03 PM »
From now on, any new additions won't be on the RCM copy until we can sort out the NAS drives syncing between themselves.

1) Karl has added 10 issues of Oric Owner to the cloud copy

2) I've added the new Amstrad book (not by KH) to the pile. It was given away free by the author.

3) I've also added all PDF issues (in A4 and mobile-friendly formats) of the new-ish magazine 'The Classic Adventurer'.

Does anyone want the full set of MagPi magazines adding? They give them away digitally (via PDF) on their website, but don't want to get RCM into any bother.

It's been ages since I added anything new, but couldn't resist this project. Picked up 9 months ago as a bit of a beater, the only thing in good condition was the side art.

Was faulty, had monitor collapse,  no sound, a broken controller and an unpleasant smell. The discovery of a mouse nest in the coinbox was a nice touch, thankfully no corpses included, just a whole lot of damage from the resistdents.

Some before shots....

All metal work sandblasted, replated, or sanded back to bare metal and re-painted

All the PCBs were refurbished, the amplifone monitor scrubbed and rebuilt. The old dag coating was trashed, so I scraped off the 10% that was left and painted on a new coat.

The yoke controller was a total strip down to bare metal too, new springs, switches fitted and some new artwork.

All PCBs were cleaned, repaired and tested. The harness went through the dishwasher a few times and had all the chewed sections chopped out and repaired.

The cabinet itself was cleaned and the insides sanded until the cat lost interest in it. Then lots of filler, repaired edges, re-routed slots, a new panel in the roof to replace a piece of floor board, and  a new perspex canopy.

Finally rebuilt, looks and plays like new!!

The force is strong with this one.

DIGITAL PRESERVATION / SoftMODing tutorials on YT (various systems)
« Last post by muguk on February 26, 2020, 07:37:38 PM » - Xbox Classic using Rocky 5 softmod (requires an Xbox controller to USB adapter and a small flashdrive) - Same guy but covers how to upgrade the internal h/drive with appropriate hardware tweaks - Fat PS2 (same author as above videos) - Wii (Gamecube compatible version) with a portable HD added which has the covers on it etc. - Wii Homebrew etc. - DOSBox on Wii (inc. mods so that it boots straight into DOSBox on power-up)

Eventually these will be acquired as full videos and placed on my cloud drive, along with all the relevant bits and pieces. Some of which are already on the drive that Karl has loaned to me.
DIGITAL PRESERVATION / My magazines (almost all in PDF format)

I've left my home PC copying across all 8839 x PDF files for all of the magazines that I have found (so far).

This is, currently, exactly the same as what's on the portable 1TB drive that I've left behind at RCM for the time being. As and when the contents are copied onto the NAS, then I'll grab the drive back.

A test last night with Karl showed that if I share the folder, then anything and everything is available to download. Which is odd as the WD My Cloud software says that this shouldn't be possible as I'm just sharing a read-only link to that folder. Hmmm ...

In case anyone needs a Virtual Machine to play with an older version of Windows, the following are hosted on my WD Cloud device.

Windows 3.1 -
(d/l size = 51.6Mb)

Windows 95 -
(d/l size = 133Mb)

Windows 98 -
(d/l size = 190Mb)

Windows XP -
(d/l size = 1.44Gb)

Windows ME -
(d/l size = 507Mb)

Windows 2000 Pro -
(d/l size = 698Mb)

Better to leech them whilst I'm working away from home during the week :)

I've joined on here hoping some may share some knowledge with me at times of need and so I can share the knowledge I have on vintage comptuers with others.

My main areas of interest are around the 486 era of Dos/Windows 3.11 PC clones, going as modern as Pentium III still interests me (although I gather that may be a bit modern for a forum like this). My wife and I also enjoy some 16-bit gaming. I keep getting a urge to find a Spectrum to break back into 8-bit gaming after a couple of decades off.

Cheers Andy.

I'm still in the process (when I'm actually at home) of copying all of the .ISO files from Karl's 2TB hard-drive onto (one of) my WD Cloud 8TB drives.

In theory, once I've found some way of automating the shared links, I'll be able to offer up any of the content. Bearing in mind they're large files (in general) plus I'm limited to what I can upload by my Virgin connection.

What will follow will be Perfect TZX files (so you can recover any Spectrum tape by converting it back to a .WAV and recording it over an original, but non-working, tape.

Likewise with Kryoflux/Greaseweazle/SCF images of floppy disks for the same reasons as above (but you will need the extra hardware to write them back).
