That is seriously impressive.... I'd like to see the equipment generating the control signals ;)

It works very similarly to a Vectrex... except on an Oscilloscope, you can't turn the beam off. Good oscilloscopes can be put into a mode where one channel controls the vertical and the other controls the horizontal.  If you feed the right voltages in you can draw any shape you like, but you can't "take the pen off the paper" as it were.

Anyone who's ever done an electronics course will have no doubt done this setup with two sine wave signal generators. If they are at the exact frequency, you get a perfect circle. Make one very slightly different to the other, and you get a rotating ellipse.

Very clever stuff.

Most analog scopes have a Z input on the back you can use to turn off the beam in X-Y mode.
